The bill to prohibit the sale of puppies, kittens and bunnies in pet stores, from breeding mills is now sitting in the Assembly Rules Committee. The Chair of the Rules Committee is Assembly Speaker Carl E. Heastie.

Please contact him today and politely ask him to: Report the PET STORE BILL (A04283) out of Rules and on to the Assembly floor for a House vote.

You are welcome to convey the following message to him:

  • This legislation will prohibit pet stores from selling puppies, kittens and bunnies from breeding mills.

  • Pet stores are free to and are encouraged to utilize their space to showcase animals for adoption from reputable humane societies.

  • This legislation will in no way impact any financial hardship for pet stores. Most stores make their revenue from pet food, supplies, etc.

  • This legislation will help shut down the Breeding Mill Pipeline in New York State.

We must work quickly! The New York State Legislature’s final day of session is Thursday June 10th. Please don’t let the animals down! Call and email Assembly Speaker Carl E. Heastie today.

May 6, 2021: URGENT ACTION NEEDED

Let's try to stop some counties from opting in to a 3-yr. pilot program that lowers the hunting age for deer from 14 to 12 and allows their use of crossbows and bolts. Twelve-year-olds can already use modified AR-15 and AK 47 rifles!

Please see this sample letter for objections to the program, or to use it as your own. Please also contact your county lawmakers via Facebook, Twitter, email, or phone to make your voice heard. Please find contact info for the counties closest to the ones that are exempt from the pilot program and will be the most likely to have an influx of very young hunters if they opt-in.

NOTE: The contacts for the 6 counties that will be heavily impacted are listed below. If you live in these counties, they must hear from you. If your county is not listed below, please look up the contact information.

Please do not contact NYC boroughs, Suffolk, Nassau, or Westchester as they are exempt from the opt-in pilot program to lower the deer hunting age from 14 to 12 and allow 12-year-olds to use crossbows.

Please forward to others.

UPDATE: 4/5/2021

DEFEATED PART X OF GOVERNOR’S BUDGET BILL S2508

EMERGES MODIFIED IN PART ZZ OF S2505C/A03005C, WHICH MAY PASS SOON!

While this isn’t the outcome we wanted to see, it is far better than it would have been without your quick action.

First, thank you ALL for speaking out against Cuomo’s inclusion of a lower hunting age for “big game” and the expanded use of crossbows to kill deer and bears. Your calls and email put hunting on the radar of the legislature – including the leadership – and we encourage you to continue your calls to keep out last-minute insertions of language that would be harmful to wildlife. See contacts below.

Part ZZ in S2505C/A03005C  WILL STILL LOWER THE HUNTING AGE FOR DEER AND BEARS, ALONG WITH ALLOWING 12 AND 13 YEAR OLDS TO USE CROSSBOWS! BUT WITH MAJOR DIFFERENCES!

Part ZZ amends the Governor’s Part X in the following ways:

  • Part X would have made a lower age to hunt “big game” a permanent change, Part ZZ has turned it into a “pilot program” with a 2 year and 7 month limit.

  • Part X would have have affected all of New York State, Part ZZ removes all NYC boroughs and the following counties: Westchester, Suffolk, and Nassau.

  • Part X would have applied to the entire state without county approval, Part ZZ requires counties to pass a local law authorizing participation.

This now forces opposition efforts to focus on counties. If you would like to prevent counties from participating in the “pilot program,” please contact LOHV®/NY at info@lohvny.org.

WE ENCOURAGE YOU TO CONTINUE YOUR CALLS TO KEEP LAST MINUTE CHANGES OUT OF THE BUDGET THAT WILL HARM WILDLIFE

UPDATE: 3/31/2021

Congratulations and thank you to all for the many calls, emails, and other communication that you made with the legislators to stop a lowered big game hunting age and to stop increased crossbow use.

PART X HAS BEEN PULLED FROM S2508C!!!!  BUT….

The battle isn't over with this series of budget bills! In last-minute negotiations (from now until midnight), lowering the hunting age can be added back! We also have to ask for similar content to be removed from all of the budget bills.

LOHV-NY sent this letter to the legislators today. Use it for more information.

LET’S KEEP UP THE PRESSURE TILL THE LAST MINUTE!

There are ten budget bills, and if even one passes with similar language, the lower hunting age will become law and crossbow use will increase!

PLEPLEASE CONTACT the following and let them know that similar content must be kept out of all budget bills!

ACTION ALERT 1: 3/22/2021

PLEASE CONTACT THE LEGISLATORS BELOW NOW!

OPPOSE PART X OF BUDGET BILL S2508B

PART X OF THE GOVERNOR’S BUDGET BILL S2508B STATES:

  • expands provisions of law relating to hunting; authorizes a holder of a license who is twelve, thirteen, fourteen or fifteen to hunt wildlife; removes limiting provisions of law related to hunting with a crossbow (Part X)

  • IF LEFT IN THE BUDGET BILL, THE HUNTING AGE WILL BE LOWERED TO 12 FROM 14 FOR DEER AND BEARS, 12 YEAR OLDS WILL BE ABLE TO USE CROSSBOWS TO KILL DEER AND BEARS, ALL BENEFICIAL TO THE FIREARMS AND BOW AND ARROW INDUSTRIES – BUT DETRIMENTAL TO THE PUBLIC AND ENVIRONMENT.

Please call and/or email the following legislators to voice your opposition to Part X in Gov. Cuomo’s Budget Bill S2508B:

ACTION ALERT 2: 3/22/2021!

YOUR CALLS ARE NEEED IMMEDIATELY!

OPPOSE BILLS  A3216/S4119; A238/S1721; A1299; S2643; A3550; A4281

These bills:
  • Lower the hunting age to 12 from 14 for deer and bears; Allow 12 year olds to use crossbows to kill deer and bears; Have other provisions beneficial to the firearms and bow and arrow industries; but detrimental to the public!

  • Consider that 12-YR OLDS ARE NOW ABLE TO USE AR-15 AND AK-47 SEMI-AUTOMATIC RIFLES! And they are more likely to use them on “big game,” thus encouraging more purchases of those weapons.
Please call and/or email the following legislators to voice your opposition:
